This compilation comes from Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills.
The Mountaineers.
One thing I would add to this list is a
wrist watch.
If you know approx. how long it takes you to travel 1 kilometre in the bush you can
determine if you have missed it or not by how long you have been walking.
Using a Watch as a Compass
A watch with hands will also help you find out what direction you are traveling.
Hold the watch in a horizontal position and point the hour hand towards the sun.
The mid-point between the hour hand and 12:00 is South.
If you are on Summer Time take the mid-point between the hour pointing towards the
sun and 1:00 o'clock to compensate for the 1 hour difference.
